A mentally embattled Jacob, weary from wondering about the intentions of his estranged brother Esau, found a place to rest. It wasn’t a Sealy posturepedic mattress where he rested but a rock. He rested his head (thoughts) upon a rock (Christ) and there the heavens opened. Not only did the heavens open unto Jacob but the Lord allowed him to see into the spiritual realm the activity of angels on assignment with regard to his life. Jacob’s life was about to change forever and when he found a ‘certain place’ to rest in the Lord, access was granted to him to literally see what was taking place concerning him.
What is the Lord saying about you? I feel as if there are some of who are literally between a ‘rock’ and a hard place. I assure you that even though this may be a most miserable place, it is actually the best place you can be. Why? Because after your futile attempts to figure out what is happening, you will eventually find yourself resting in the Lord. When you can get to that place of rest, you will see the Lord reveal things to you that will help you understand where you are and what you are facing. You will be able to boldly and confidently face the ‘morrow and you will know beyond a surety that the Lord is with you.
Rest in the Lord, dear friend, and know that though you may experience a whirlwind in your situation, find that certain place. Lay your head on the Lord and let Him ease your burden. Look up in faith and know that you have a heavenly host working with you and for you under direct orders from the God of your salvation. You will face your Esau and you will emerge unscathed.
All five ministry gifts are equally important. We need the apostle. He is a spiritual father, architect and builder. We need the soul winning evangelist that reminds us of reaching the lost. We need the pastor who counsels, nurtures and comforts and the teacher to instruct, tutor and explain God’s Word and ways. And we need the prophet, God’s voice of edification, exhortation and comfort. All five ascension gifts have decided graces on their lives that add something clear-cut to the born again believer.
LOGOS TO RHEMA
Prophets are gifted with living (rhema) Word to the Church. Your bible is full of words known as logos, the written Word. Have you ever read your bible and suddenly the words sprang to life and you received a revelation of what you just read? That is an example of the Word, logos, changing into rhema, or life-giving Word. That’s what we call spiritual revelation. Prophets flow in revelation or rhema.
“He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith to the churches.” (Revelation 2:29)
We need to listen to what the Holy Spirit is saying to the Church, not just what the Spirit hath said. We need the freshness of prophetic revelation, that life-giving rhema that comes through the prophet’s gift. Without that refreshing we die a boring religious death and are not spiritually relatable to our generation. We all need the prophetic voice to come into the earth that we might have a “living Word” imparted into our lives. Without the life provided by the prophetic voice, the Church would be like the dry bones in Ezekiel’s vision.
God wants to raise a prophetic people who are able to hear His voice clearly. Not just lone prophets, but a prophetic people. It is important the world hears the Word of the Lord with power and refreshing that comes from the prophetic anointing. We need a prophetic people who have been delivered from the “fear of men” and who are not “men pleasers.”
ROTOR ROOTER MINISTRY
Prophets carry a great sense of spiritual authority. They enjoy rooting out, pulling down, and destroying all spiritual opposition that gets in the way of the plans and purpose of God.
“See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant.” (Jeremiah 1:10)
In this verse, nations are symbolic of the natural realm, and kingdoms symbolic of the spiritual realm. To “root out” means to lay hold of the root of a thing and pull. The prophet is called to root out. He is called to pull down. He is called to destroy. He is called to overthrow. Notice that all these words deal with destroying opposition. Prophets are God’s spiritual reformers and revolutionaries. To reform means to bring about change.
Prophets make some people nervous and they will try to get rid of the prophet or close his mouth before he gets to do what he is best at, building and planting. God builds by His Spirit and there are many spiritual obstacles that must be dealt with before the building and planting begins. When we understand the prophet’s gift we can all be more effective when warring against the spiritual forces that oppose the establishing and advancement of the Kingdom of God.
The Holy Spirit uses Christ’ five fold ascension prophets as spiritual plows to break the hardest of sin-blackened soils and cut the deepest furrows within the heart of man. The prophet is gifted to prepare the way toward spiritual breakthrough through his rotor-rooter challenge of any spiritual opposition that might get in the way. One reason some feel uncomfortable with prophetic operations is because of the results of the prophet’s prayers. What the prophet attacks through intercession in the Spirit will sometimes reveal itself in the natural. If he attacks rebellion, for example, then any common ground with rebellion in the people will manifest. But rather than stop the prophet’s rooting out intercession, we should continue to press in and let that prophetic grace finish its work. Once the spiritual warfare is finished the prophetic gift will open the heavens to us. Remember when Daniel was battling the principalities and powers? Because he didn’t give up and quit the angel was able to get through with the Word of the Lord for the nation.
Sometimes when the prophet speaks, people get stirred, troubled or offended. Offenses are the bait of Satan used to unplug you from important spiritual relationships. If you are being challenged, perhaps the Holy Spirit is trying to prepare you for your future. I have seen the prophetic gift in action used to prune out the dead wood that keeps us from growing. Pruning is good for us all because pruning is necessary to produce more fruit. Currently we are in a time when the Church is being challenged to awaken from its sleep. Roots of binding religious traditions are being pulled out because some have been sitting in religious comfort zones for too long. As the “restoration of all things” continues on so will the restoration of true prophetic ministry. The Church is moving forward. From be healed, for example, to be taught. And from be blessed, to be changed. Everybody likes to be healed, taught, and blessed because it requires little of the hearer. But the restoration of the prophetic moves the Church into governmental authority that requires more of us. All believers are called to govern. They are a priesthood of kings given spiritual authority that enables them to be more than conquerors. In the days ahead prophets will be more involved in activating the spiritual authority of every believer to make a difference with their lives.
ON PERSONAL PROPHECY
1. Are forerunners who make a way for “greater things” to come (Matthew 3:3).
2. Deal with spiritual climates (Jeremiah 1:10).
3. Turn people from sin to holiness (Jeremiah 23:21-22).
4. Are front line intercessors (Jeremiah 27:18).
5. Turn the hearts of fathers and sons (Malachi 4:5-6).
6. Challenge dead traditions of men and dangerous spirits of religion (Matthew 3:9-10).
7. Are stewards of the mysteries of God (Ephesians 3:5).
8. Carry lamentations, mourning and woe (intercession burdens) (Ezekiel 2:10).
9. Are fore-tellers of things to come (Amos 3:7).
10. Contend with false prophets of divination including Jezebel and Baal (1 Kings 18:19).
11. Challenge demonic territorial guards (Acts 13:7).
12. Speak to the nations and kingdoms (Jeremiah 1:5).
Prophetic ministry is a wonderful gift from God. Moses said, “Would God that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put his spirit upon them” (Numbers 11:29). With them Jesus said, “I will build my Church and the gates of hell shall not prevail.”
Many know of the account of Jonah, but here is what I propose to stir your hearts through the studying of his ministry. Noah’s prophetic ministry was limited because of his disobedience and rebellion. He had one opportunity to minister and even then his heart was not upright before the Lord. Here is something that all ministers need to understand, especially the prophetic ones.
You may not like the people you are sent to. They may not like you. You may not care for the work the Lord has assigned you to because you don’t feel as if the people are on your level but who are you to question the Lord about the assignments He gives you? Just as the Lord has chosen you, He could have very easily chosen someone else. The reason He chose you is because He knows you have ‘heart’ issues with ‘those people’ and He is using that assignment to circumcise your heart. He knows that you are going to kick your way through it, suck your teeth, roll your eyes, and even attempt to run backwards before you get a clue about what you are supposed to be doing. And if you don’t get yourself together by the time for that ministry assignment, you won’t have to worry about a second time to get it right because there may not be a second chance for you to make another mess.
Even after confining Jonah to the ‘prison’ in the belly of the fish, Jonah preached and still had an attitude. Do you know what the issue was? He didn’t really have the heart to see people delivered. As long as he could choose the message, the people, and the timing, he would have been fine but to be assigned to heathens was repulsive to him and he disdained it. Since when are you supposed to enjoy every assignment given you in the Kingdom of God? Who said it was supposed to be fun? Who said that you would laugh yourself all the way to the bank? Whoever told you that lied. The Lord never chooses something for you to advance His Kingdom based upon your liking and your preference. This is not a democracy. The Kingdom of God is theocratically ruled. That means either you do it, or someone else will.
Sadly in the case of Jonah, the prophet of God, he will go down in history as the minister who preached one service. Yes, though Nineveh repented during his time, God didn’t reward him for it because his heart was still hardened against the people and even against God at one point. He had one chance to demonstrate the prophetic ministry in his life and that’s all he could handle. Some people can’t handle revival after revival or crusade after crusade because their hearts are impure. They get one chance to minister and after that God resigns them to a desert place because their character can’t afford another opportunity to represent the Father to His people.
Nehemiah represented the building anointing of the apostle in his time. Tobias and Sanballat are still at work today trying with everything they can to distract and destroy the work of the Lord with foolishness and nonsense. Every apostle who is unsure of their call needs to study that book. Nehemiah built as Ezra the prophet prophesied. Even in the OT, you see the apostle/prophet foundation for building. He did the work and those WHOSE HEARTS THE LORD TOUCHED worked alongside him. He didn’t manipulate them, he didn’t prophesy to them, and he didn’t control them. God gave his building partners the heart and mind to work and to give to his work because He was reBUILDING THE TEMPLE. Not his, but the Lord’s. It was all to God’s glory.
When we learn to chase the word instead of chasing the glory, the glory cloud will actually surround us because there is enough water in our river bellies to attract God’s presence. Nowadays, folk are hung on up on an experience and left off from studying the Holy scriptures and the rivers …run…..dry…..
“Therefore it is come to pass, that as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the LORD of hosts:”
( Zech 7:13)Read: Zechariah 7:8-14
The Lord Jesus is a super Eagle who rides on the topmost height. You are seated together with Him in heavenly places ( Eph 2:5-6 ). In Deuteronomy 32:13, we read that God made the Israelites to ride on the high places. There is a route for you in the high places. Habakkuk 3:17-19 says even though things may be unpleasant and not as you expect presently, yet a route is awaiting you in the high places. You shall still walk on your high places. This year, you will ride with the Lord in your high places. There is increase (profit) in the high places. Oil and honey ooze out of the rock in the high places. As the Lord takes you to your high place of promotion, prosperity, progress and enlargement, you will receive blessings never thought possible in Jesus’ Name. You are a divine eaglet. Because the eagle takes the highest air route, it becomes difficult for it to be caught. As long as you are on the same flight with the King of Glory – always praising, worshipping and giving thanks in His presence, it becomes difficult for you to be ensnared by the hunter’s traps.
Why? You are taking a far higher route. Praise and worship are higher routes that when taken, you cannot be caught by the bullets of the enemy. Two parallel lines they say, never meet. All satanic attacks follow a particular route – attack route. Praise or worship is a higher route and therefore cannot intersect. If you are regularly hit by enemy fire, check the route you are taking. If you are travelling in disobedience, self-will, or trust in man, they are on the same low routes with attack route.
Anything on the same low route will be within the reach of enemies. Believers who are supposed to be seated in Christ Jesus in heavenly places find themselves vulnerable to the powers of darkness that are supposedly under them when they violate the code of conduct for operating in the heavenly plane – the Bible. Anytime you break the Word of God, you lose your position in the spiritual realm and begin an earth-ward descent.
At that point, the powers that were under you like the animals under Adam after the fall, will rebel against your government. Even animals want their independence. What route are you plying? Are you descending from the place of power and glory? Repent and ask God for a restoration today.- Pastor Enoch Adeboye
During my prophetic mentoring session last night I covered a chapter from my book, The Burden of Prophetic Ministry, on the burdens of the Lord. I talked about Rahab’s role in Jericho and the fact that though the Lord told Joshua to take down Jericho, He yet had salvation for Rahab in mind. Contrary to popular opinion, the Lord is still in the business of saving souls. I know that God is ‘doing a new thing’ and we are ‘chasing the glory’ but if your work in ministry is not setting the captives free, your labor is in vain.
The Lord knew full well that Rahab would one day fall into the ancestral line of the Lord Jesus and therefore ensured her survival of Jericho’s ruin by sending the spies to her whore house first. Yes, the Lord is so serious about getting deliverance down to you that He will send someone right where you are, in the middle of your mess to bring you a word of deliverance. The Lord didn’t need spies in Jericho, He wanted to offer salvation to Rahab’s house so he routed His army in her direction. Those spies were His sending agency.
This is how the prophetic word of the Lord works. No matter where you are in your mess, the word of God comes to you, sits at your table, and speaks a word of deliverance in your life. Only a fool would think that Heaven goes through the sending of armies and spies to find you in your place to prophesy to you a new car. Prophets are concerned with the souls of mankind. We don’t care whether you like us or not, for many times we spy in enemy territory, but you better believe that we are going to drop that word like it’s hot and get on up out of there as soon as we are finished with our assignment because we are not trying to make friends with you, we are trying to get you delivered so God can use you.
Even though God revealed Joseph’s destiny to him at an early age, it wouldn’t be until AFTER his prison experience that he would embrace it. The dream of greatness he received did not include being ripped away from his family, falsely accused, left for dead, given away, living with heathens, enslavement, and ultimate imprisonment. No one told him that it would be easy but he didn’t break under pressure either. Through every place in his life where God humbled and broke him, he endured it and came through it. When the appointed time to reach his destiny was at hand, he was ready. Why? Because he submitted to every crushing and bruising of his ego that was necessary for him to attain it.
Might we learn something from Joseph’s track to destiny. It doesn’t happen overnight. There is pain, sweat, and tears involved. There will be many gravestones behind you to prove the things you’ve died to and there won’t be many who accompany you through your seasons of bleeding, but I tell you this. If you can endure it, if you can handle it, and if you will let God mold you, He will make certain that you kiss the face of the day of your destiny. Only be though strong and very courageous and then you will have good success.
Every God ordained king in the scriptures was assigned a prophet. They had a specific prophetic voice that they were required to submit, adhere, and hearken to. The ungodly kings also received visitation from God’s holy prophets when the season called for it but the prophets were not required to stay in their company. They would deliver the word and leave for they were not required to remain housed with heathen kings. Holy prophets of God understand atmospheres and environments. They have a sense of knowing when they are welcomed, when they are received, when they are taken advantage of, and when they were rejected.
As God assigns prophets, He also releases them. When the persons they are called to mentor show continual signs of dishonor and disrespect, the Lord releases the prophet from their obligation to minister to the king and reassigns them to another more grateful and appreciative king. Bottom line, every king needs genuine and God sent prophetic ministry.
